Today’s young doctors face far more financial challenges than their predecessors did 40 years ago, AMA Wire writes. But there are simple steps they can take to ensure that money problems don’t encroach on their health and well-being, according to the publication. Timothy Harrington, who started his 40-year medical career after graduating in 1965, tells AMA Wire that few doctors had debt back then. Tuition was cheaper, as were costs of living and raising a family, he says. Fast-forward to today: 81% of physicians in their 30s are still paying off their student loans, according to a 2016 Report on U.S. Physician’s Financial Preparedness cited by AMA Wire. Roughly half of them were $150,000 in debt by the time they graduated, according to the publication. It’s no wonder, then, that many doctors in their 30s have saved less than $50,000 for retirement, AMA Wire writes. Meanwhile, few get help from professional financial planners even though most physicians suspect don’t put much stock in their own financial knowledge, according to the publication. Harrington has some suggestions for young doctors to avoid burnout as a result of financial stress, AMA Wire writes. The first step, he says, is to choose a field that they love rather than a field that would bring them the most money, according to the publication. The rest will fall into place with a little planning and discipline, according to the publication.
